The Praza das Praterías (Silver Jewels Square) is a
monumental square and melting pot of architectural styles at the heart of Santiago's
Old Town. Here you will be able to see the South façade of the Cathedral, which
is Romanesque as well as the façade of its Renaissance cloister. The fountain
of the horses in the middle of the square is Baroque (1825)
The Praza das Praterías was named after
the many silversmiths who have had their workshops here since the 17th century.
Southampton
is the largest city and the major port in the county of Hampshire on the south
coast of England. It lies at the northernmost point of Southampton Water at the
confluence of the River Test and River Itchen, with the River Hamble joining to
the south of the urban area. The city has an estimated population of 253.651.
The city's name is sometimes abbreviated in writing to "So'ton" or
"Soton", and a resident of Southampton is called a Sotonian.
Southampton
is sometimes considered together with Portsmouth and surrounding towns to form
a single metropolitan area known as South Hampshire, also known as Solent City.
SOUTHAMPTON IS FAMOUS FOR…
The British passenger liner RMS Titanic did its
maiden and last voyage from Southampton.
But
Southampton is also noted for the World War II narrative as one of
the departure points for D-Day, and more recently as the home port of a number
of the largest cruise ships in the world. At certain times of the year,
The Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria may all visit Southampton
at the same time, in an event commonly called “Arrival of the Three Queens”. Southampton
Football Club, “The Saints”, plays in the Premier League at St Mary's Stadium.
West Quay
is a large shopping centre and retail park, it is one of the largest
City-Centre shopping complex in Europe. Inaugurated in 2000, it boasts
over 100 stores spread over three shopping levels and it has an area
of 70,000 m2
Based at the heart of Southampton, SeaCity Museum tells the story of the people of the city, their lives and historic connections with Titanic and the sea. It’s an interactive experience designed for all ages.
It’s
considered Southampton's first museum in 1912, although the house had been
built in 1491. The garden, based on manuscripts and other historic sources, is
a recreation of a Tudor knot garden, that’s why the plants are particularly
herbs and edible plants.
Formerly
called The Empire, the Mayflower Theatre has a capacity of 2.300 and it
features West End theatre shows when they tour the UK.
A local legend says the theatre is reportedly haunted by the ghost of an old
man who has been seen sitting backstage in a wicker chair.
LIFESTYLE
Southampton
was considered the "fittest city in the UK" some years ago. The
results were based on the incidence of heart disease, the amount of junk food
and alcohol consumed, and the level of gym membership. The city has 64 parks
and sports grounds. The University of Southampton and Southampton Solent University together
have a student population of over 40.000.

Postcard 6 has been sent to Southampton, in the United
Kingdom, 1043 kilometres away!
This time it was an advanced 1 student, Lucía Picado,
who was in charge of writing the postcard.
Hope Kristyna likes our postcard, which features one
of Santiago's most impressive squares, Praza das Praterías!
Lucía has done some research and has discovered very
interesting facts about Southampton. You can read her text in our section
EXPLORING THE WORLD. If you want to know more about Praza das Praterías, go to

As you may remember, we are taking part in a creative
writing project “Palabras da man ao corazón”, which will take us to various
countries in the world!
What is a travelling notebook?
It is a notebook written collectively by students from various different countries which records anything they would like to share with others like curious facts about their hometown, their hobbies, their experience learning a foreign language, a piece of art, etc. There are five
schools taking part in this chain:
Every time we receive a notebook, we will write on it
and send it to Ribeira. From Ribeira it will fly to Russia. From Russia it
travel to Mieres and from Mieres to Pamplona, before coming back to us after
being travelling for 5 months.
Students at Sar have been working hard and with
enthusiasm on their travelling notebook for this year. They did some research
on Santiago de Compostela, the festivals we celebrate here and our school too.
The notebook has already been headed for Ribeira but,
if you feel curious, you can have a look at it below!
Postcard 5 shows the well-known
swinging incense container in Santiago's Cathedral, the Botafumeiro.
The Botafumeiro is one of the Cathedral's most popular emblems. It is a
spectacular incensory made of silver-plated grass that weighs 80 kilos! It's
used in special religious services as can be seen in the video below:
Pingtung
is the 5th largest county in Taiwan and
the 2nd largest of Southern Taiwan after Kaohsiung City. It borders KaohsiungCity to
the north, Taitung County to the east, the Taiwan
Strait to the west and the Bashi Channel to the south.
The top
tourist attraction in Pingtung County is Kenting National Park. The Kenting
National Park (sometimes Kending) is a national park located
in the Hengchun Peninsula of Pingtung County, Taiwan. This is Taiwan's
oldest and southernmost national park and one of the most popular resort places
in Taiwan.
It is well known for its tropical climate and sunshine, scenic mountain and
beach. Moreover, the Spring Scream rock-band festival is held here
every March.
Pingtung City has
two night markets, one named after the city itself and another called Rui Guang. The first one
offers your standard street food. The second one is of a different brand and is
a bit harder to find, especially in northern Taiwan.
This CulturalPark is
something of a "living museum". It showcases the architecture and
lifestyle of nine of Taiwan's
aboriginal tribes. Each of the nine tribes has its own area, where replicas of
their living quarters are authentically reproduced. If you're looking for a way
to get familiar with Taiwan's
aboriginal culture but aren't thrilled about reading placards in an
air-conditioned museum, this is a great alternative.
This
island is located eight or so miles off the coast of Pingtung.
You can get here by ferry from DonggangHarbor in PingtungCounty.
The island sits atop loads of coral, so it is rich with snorkelling
opportunities and lots of laying around on the beach. Baisha (white sand) Bay
is the most common spot for diving and snorkeling.
LIFESTYLE
PingtungCity is
not typically on tourist itineraries. However, people are friendly and foreign
people will appreciate unique aspects of southern Taiwanese life, such as night
markets, bright neon lights and numerous Buddhist temples. Streets are lined
with palm trees. In the center of town is Zhongshan park, which has a soccer field,
pond, fountains and playground.
Since the
city does not cater to tourists, life typically revolves around the extended
family and friends.
